Description

Instituto Portugues do mar e da Atmosfera IP is the Portuguese Institute for the Ocean and Atmosphere (IPMA). It is the National Research Institute devoted to ocean and atmospheric science and technology, providing technical and scientific support to the definition and implementation of national strategies and policies in these areas of expertise. IPMA operates and maintains state-owned scientific infrastructures such as research vessels, aquaculture facilities (in land and offshore) and the Portuguese meteorological, climate and seismological networks.

IPMA has vast experience in interdisciplinary studies related to all fields of marine sciences and biodiversity, namely oceanography, marine biology and ecology, fisheries, aquaculture, upgrade of fisheries products, paleoclimate, processes of mineral resources, and natural hazards (e.g., tsunamis and submarine mass movements). IPMA also has a long experience of sea going and operational activities, related with fisheries research, marine environment monitoring, marine geosciences among others.

Role

IPMA are involved in WP2 Transnational Access.

Access to Research Vessels and related infrastructure: RV Mar Portugal [Global/Ocean], a dynamic positioning vessel equipped with marine surveying equipment. RV Mar Portugal is able to carry out multidisciplinary marine research focused mainly on the Atlantic Ocean, from coastal to ultra-deep areas, to support environmental, halieutic, oceanographic studies and the operation of the ROV Luso [Workclass ROV, 6000m], a remotely operated vehicle capable of diving to depths of 6.000m, property of the Portuguese Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf (EMEPC).

IPMA will also undertake activities in WP6 Education and Training, WP4 TA call preparation and WP8 Foresight: Legacy and Roadmap.
