EUROFLEETS+ Education and Training Activities
Due to COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and effective ban and limitations on international travel, the practical training activities have been frozen for the most of 2020. Even if the situation still remains uncertain, we are ready to restart. After the success of the first Eurofleets+ Floating University (held in February 2020 on board the Irish R/V Celtic Voyager), two others are planned in 2021. The “Use of bio-optical parameters as convenient tool to study marine biogeochemical processes” cou
Eurofleets community to establish a long-term sustainable system
The time is ripe for the Eurofleets community to establish a long-term sustainable system to ensure the coordination of the European Research Vessels, the ability to handle Transnational Access to Research Vessels and Large EXchangeable Instruments, together with strengthening the sharing of knowledge, experience, best practice and collaboration among research vessels and/or LEXI operators and various stakeholders across Europe (Figure 1). Based on the analysis of the current European Research I
Management of data acquired as part of Eurofleets+ cruises, using EARS
Eurofleets+ facilitates access to 27 research vessels, and multiple AUVs and ROVs from European and international partners by means of transnational access (TA) calls. A Data Policy has been adopted for all data sets as acquired and processed in the framework of TA cruises, namely to make these findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR). Therefore, data management (DM) is integrated in Eurofleets+ activities, adopting SeaDataNet standards and services, aimed at widely disseminating
EUROFLEETS+ is an associated partner in the new RItrainPlus project
Eurofleets+ are delighted to further develop synergies with the University of Milano-Bicocca (UNIMIB) through our associated partnership in the new RItrainPlus project. The landscape of pan-European RIs has changed in recent times into a very rich and diverse community (see ESFRI and National RI roadmaps). The introduction of the ERIC legal instrument in 2009 has particularly helped distributed RIs to find adequate solutions for their distributed nature, linking many smaller RIs (often Core Faci
Inaugural Transnational Access Project 2020 – Eurofleets+ Focus AUV Cruise
The FOCUS AUV Cruise took place in October on board the NIWA RV Tangaroa with the University of Gothenburg Hugin AUV over 29 days. The AUV was used to survey the Kaikōura canyon, off the east coast of the South Islandin New Zealand, to measure the ecological and sedimentological impact and recovery following the 2016 Kaikōura Earthquake. Voyage leader and NIWA marine geologist Dr Joshu Mountjoy says this is the first time such a sophisticated piece of technology has operated in New Zealand water
Transnational Access (TA) Schedule
A provisional schedule of Eurofleets+ funded cruises is now available for 2021 and 2022. Following two Transnational Access calls there are a total of 20 cruises confirmed and provisionally scheduled over the next 2 years. One survey has already taken place in 2020 utilising the University of Gothenburg’s Hugin AUV on a cruise in the Kaikoura Canyon in New Zealand. 13 cruises are scheduled for 2021 and 7 for 2022. Geographically, the cruises are dispersed throughout the Eurofleets+ regions w

The portal contains resources for people of all ages, from young children of 4 years of age upwards. The resources available can be used by teachers, parents and members of the public to increase their knowledge of research vessels and underwater robots such as Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Gliders. The resources cover to
Gear up! Eurofleets+ inaugural funded Transnational Access project gets under way!
Following a very successful Eurofleets+ Transnational Access Call the FOCUSAUV (Fine scale Observations following earthquake-triggered Canyon flUShing by AUV) survey was successful in securing funding and will be implemented from September 30th to October 29th in New Zealand. The survey is supported by the Eurofleets+ a H2020 funded project which facilitates open access to an integrated and advanced research vessel fleet, designed to meet the evolving and challenging needs of the user community.
